I have downright been one busy bee lately with my art. In my absence here with the blog, I've learned a lot and would like to share. I decided after much hemming and hawing to throw down the cash and take this online art course I found. I am loving everything about it! So it's called Make Art that Sells by Lilla Roger's Studio. On top of the very creative assignments, inspiration boards and positive quotes her advice on having an art career are extremely thoughtful. Though, she doesn't do live reviews for these classes anymore as a student you have access to her massive library of past galleries of classes where she downloaded her live reviews.
So each course includes 5 assignments that come with their own pack of references and inspirational work. The course I chose had Bolt Fabric Design, Home Decor, Children's Picture Book, Wall Art and Gift. As I have always been drawn to children's books I thought this would be the best for me.
What was great about the timing of when I signed up for this self-paced course is that she was doing an extra competition for Uppercase Magazine, a meticulously curated publication of artists and their work. The winner was to be featured in the magazine with their winning piece as the cover. The assignment was to make a surface pattern design. I decided to mess around with some characters that I had drawn last year unsure of what to do with them.
I decided to work in watercolor making a background separately, scanned everything and had a crack at Adobe Illustrator. I seriously haven't used the program for quite sometime so to say I had a few hiccups would be quite the understatement. Thankfully with the help from my very patient husband, I was pretty happy with the end result....of course there's always something I wish I had changed at the time.
Needless to say I didn't win but it was merely the beginning of what is my newly paved path and I am ready for the adventure.
